“Basically the idea behind net zero is you create as much energy as you consume,” says Rowe. “To prepare for what may be more rigid building codes, and to continue to innovate for future homebuyers we wanted to provide lots that give the option to build net zero homes.”

Building net zero homes has become much easier than when they first came on the market. The homebuilders combine traditional technology with new solar technology to make it more affordable. The mechanical systems are designed to be as simple as possible so the average person can live hassle free.

“One of the misconceptions is that people think it’s complicated,” says Tara-Lynn Blum, who works with Landmark Homes in designing net zero homes and is also a net zero homeowner. “But the affordable net zero product in ONE at Keswick is simple, it’s easy, it’s manageable, and it’s not that expensive. It’s attainable.”
